McDanecdote Monday: You get one thought, make it a good one

I have a few lifters who are pretty good golfers. The term “swing thought” came up one day and it’s perfect for weight lifting. In golf a swing thought is a simple, positive, non-mechanical cue, it is the only thing the golfer focuses on during the swing. I use it the same way in weightlifting…for the most part. I am a fan of using mechanical cues “knees up, body down,” ‘legs drive the elbows…” But either way, this is a great way to help the athlete who bogs them self down with thinking about every aspect of the lift. If you are a coach think of something simple that will help the athlete (probably the thing you tell them the most anyway) and have them use that as there “swing thought.” If you are an athlete tell them about this idea and see if you and your coach can implement it in your training.
